Things to do
Whitby and its surrounding villages are reached by a wonderful drive across the North York Moors whether approached from the south west via York and Pickering, south from Scarborough or north west from Teeside and Guisborough.
Our particular situation makes the beaches and cliffs on the Coast, the delightful villages in the Esk Valley and the open Moorland easily accessible. There are circular walks and excursions from the house.

- The lane which passes in front of ‘The Lawns’ links the footpath from Aislaby to Ruswarp where there is boating on the Esk and a small golf course. From here you can take the Esk Valley Way east to Whitby or west back to Briggswath.
- Sandsend can be reached via Newholm and the hidden Raithwaite valley with a return along the 2 mile stretch of beach towards Whitby.
- A longer walk is to Robin Hood’s Bay by the disused railway line through Stainsacre and Hawsker returning on the coastal path which is part of the Cleveland Way.
- There are many ancient paved footpaths in our area and generally across the North York Moors. Lots are in excellent repair and afford the rambler a unique way of enjoying our fabulous countryside. Fine examples are found in a walk from the house via Aislaby, Ugglebarnby, Sneaton and Ruswarp.
- Sleights railway station on the Esk Valley Line is directly below us just 10 minutes walk away. We have enjoyed using the railway to explore the Valley by making one station our destination, walking to another and returning by train.
- At Grosmont the Esk Valley line connects with the popular North York Moors Steam Railway. A return trip between Grosmont and Pickering is a wonderful reminder of days gone by. Another circular excursion is to take the steam train to Goathland, a lovely moorland village where the TV series ‘Heartbeat’ is filmed, and return to Grosmont on foot via the ‘rail trail’.
- Whitby is a must for a day’s outing and you certainly can’t leave the area without sampling Whitby Fish and Chips!
